Providers of ADSL Solutions.
The broadband revolution is leading to the availability of always-on connectivity at a relatively low cost compared to Diginet
connectivity. One of the technologies spearheading this revolution is ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line).
Most product offerings of ADSL have not been without limitations:
- Security Issues
- DDOS [Distributed Denial of Service]
Attacks
- Virus Attacks
- Lack of Control of IP Addressing
- Telco Network Instability
The solutions offered by the products in this guide address the limitations in the following manner:
- Security is integrated into the solution
- IP addressing is flexible in order to
meet the customer’s requirements
- Devices at the ADSL access site are
remotely addressable e.g. mail servers, point of sales systems
etc.
- Availability of an uncapped service
- Limited management is provided by MTN NS – the customer edge device is managed by MTN NS
Due to the nature and pricing of the offering, there are various services that are excluded from this offering:
- End-to-end management of the customer’s
connectivity into the VPN or to the Internet
- Service Level Agreements that guarantee
levels of service
- Certainty in the Mean Time to Repair
(MTTR) of faults
- Advanced services viz. Appletalk, IBM SNA
and other non-IP routing protocols, Quality of Service
- VPN type monitoring viz. Traffic
graphing, IP accounting
- Guarantees on throughput
- Management of PSTN portion of
connectivity
- On-site installations and support
- Ability for customers to provide and manage the customer premises equipment
Characteristics of Different Access Media
Dial Up Solution
A dial-up connection enables the user to dial-up to any destination number including an ISP.
Telkom billing rates are variable and are based on the duration of the call. This service is available nationally irrespective of
distance.
ISDN
ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) is a switched, dial-up connection that enables the user to dial-up to any
destination number including an ISP. A user can therefore access the Internet, a video conference or utilise the service as a
backup to Diginet.
Diginet / Leased Line Services
Diginet or leased line services are dedicated point-to-point connections that provide the user with a permanently connected service.
ADSL
ADSL is a relatively low cost, ‘always-on’ connection for last mile access that is aimed at small and medium branch offices seeking permanent access to the broader organisational network. The connecting site must be within a 4km radius of an
ADSL supported Telkom exchange.
MTN NS Solution Overview
Initially the MTN NS offering includes 2 products:
- ADSL VPN Access service
- Internet Access with Static IP address
The MTN NS ADSL solution is specific to certain routers to ensure that the highest levels of performance and security are
delivered to customers. The solution makes use of the latest point-to-multipoint VPN technologies available from Juniper and Cisco to establish
the VPN connection. An ADSL POTS Modem is not a requirement for the solution since MTN Network Solutions supplies the Broadband Router.
Product 1 – ADSL VPN Access Service (Leased line replacement product)
Initially this will be provided via ADSL. A Broadband Router, managed by MTN NS, will be installed at the customer premises.
A tunnel is then established between the site and MTN NS network, creating a logical connection
between the remote client PC, or network, and the corporate VPN network. Once connected, the client is logically situated on the
corporate network and is able to access network facilities (e.g. printers, file servers, mail servers and application servers) as if she was working at a workstation physically situated on that local network.
Internet Bandwidth is allocated to the ADSL site from the customer’s VPN Internet pool.
Product 2 – Internet Access with Static IP address
This product provides an uncapped internet access offering, as well as a static IP address.
An encrypted tunnel is established between the CPE device and the MTN NS network.
The tunnel provides a static IP address, enabling the setup of mail, a web server or a DMZ.
Solution Description and Specification
Where Telkom install the ADSL telephone access service, MTN NS are responsible for providing the ADSL Broadband Router and for setting up the connectivity and tunnel.
The tunnel set up by the Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) enables the encapsulation of a
wide variety of protocol packet types, creating a virtual point-to-point link to other CPE routers situated at remote points
over an IP internetwork. By connecting multiprotocol subnetworks in a single-protocol backbone, IP tunneling allows
network expansion across the single-protocol backbone environment.
All ADSL VPN access failures will be supported by the MTN NS 24x7 Support centre contactable on 086 011 0860.
ADSL is a best effort service and no guarantees of throughput are provided by either Telkom or MTN NS. The service provided by MTN NS will have uncapped local and international bandwidth.
Conclusion
Making use of Telkom’s ADSL service, via Telkom’s IPConnect, MTN NS is now able to offer VPN clients a new high-bandwith, low cost access medium that provides a broadband connection to the client’s data network.
